Munster Technological University (MTU) has been nationally recognised for excellence in leisure and fitness operations, as both the Kerry Sports Academy (KSA) and MTU Arena in Bishopstown, Cork have received awards from Ireland Active through the National Quality Standard Scheme (NQS), which is the only industry-specific award for leisure facilities in Ireland.
The awards were presented at the Ireland Active National Quality Standard Awards Ceremony, which took place recently, celebrating excellence across Ireland’s leisure, health, and fitness sector.

Kerry Sports Academy achieved the Gold Award, the highest possible recognition within the scheme, following three years of continuous improvement and development.
This distinction places KSA among only two leisure centres in County Kerry to attain this elite level of recognition, underscoring the University’s commitment to excellence in facility management and service delivery.

MTU Arena in Bishopstown, Cork, was awarded the National Quality Standards Bronze Award and was also shortlisted for the ‘Best Newcomer’ category.
This was the Arena’s first year applying for the award, and the recognition marks a major milestone for the €13 million state-of-the-art facility, which was officially opened in November 2023.
Professor Maggie Cusack, President of Munster Technological University, said: ‘We are incredibly proud that both Kerry Sports Academy and MTU Arena have been recognised with National Quality Standard Awards. Mervyn O’Mahony, MTU Arena Operations Manager, said: “This national recognition is a fantastic achievement for the team. It speaks to the professionalism, consistency, and enthusiasm that go into operating the Arena each day. We’re proud to play a key role in promoting a safe, inclusive, and high-quality environment that benefits both the University and the broader community.” O’Mahony also extended his gratitude to the MTU Arena staff, Health and Safety team, cleaning staff and in particular to Dylan Haines, a student from the Department of Sport, Health and Childhood Studies, who contributed significantly to the NQSA application as part of his academic project.
